Board Highlights, November 30
Approval of Audited Financial Statements:
Following a presentation from Treasurer, Susan Roy and from the independent auditing firm which conducts the Chinook's Edge audit, the Board approved the audited Financial Statements for the year ended August 31, 2016. The Audit Committee had reviewed details from each school and department prior to the financial statements being brought forward to the Board. Overall, the statements show revenue of $128.7 million, and expenses of $128.5 million. The Audited Financial Statements will now be filed with Alberta Education and posted to the website at www.cesd73.ca.
Three Year Education Plan:
The Board approved this year’s combined Three Year Education Plan and Annual Results Report, following a presentation by Karyn Barber, Associate Superintendent of System Services. Trustees were pleased with the data compiled in the report, which indicates an overall upward trend through many measures. The full report will be posted to the website, and school-specific information will be available through each school. “This is an excellent report, and it provides in-depth information about the hard work taking place in Chinook’s Edge on behalf of our students,” said Colleen Butler, Board Chair.
Community Learning Campus:
CLC Director Jackie Taylor and Associate Superintendent Ray Hoppins provided a year-end financial report. The finance teams of both Olds College and Chinook’s Edge have completed a reconciliation report and everyone involved is committed to ensuring long term feasibility of the joint venture, through clear financial targets and detailed plans.
The Board passed a motion that bus fees not be waived for students attending ‘schools of choice’ and that all fees must be paid at the time of application for enrolment to the school. The Board continues to voice concern regarding insufficient funding for rural education, which directly impacts the division’s transportation budget and creates ongoing funding challenges.
Locally developed courses:
The Board approved locally developed courses, ‘Creative Writing & Publishing 15/25/35’, for course offerings at the high school level.
The next meeting of the Board of Chinook’s Edge School Division No. 73 is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, December 14, 2016.
